No more Free Wifi in SLC? 2
I just noticed this article on Pete Ashdown's blog. To summarize, there was a bill written for Utah law (HB 139) that requires anyone providing internet to restrict access for minors. Since XMission provides wifi to the public for free in many areas in and surrounding SLC, Ashdown will pull all of it if the bill passes so they won't be threatened with civil penalties.
After I finished college and started doing work as a developer in the SLC area around 2003, XMission wireless was essential for me to do work, as at many times I had no office in which to work. Taking XMission wifi away from SLC is a serious detriment to the city IMO.
Another thing about this bill that frustrates me is the wording:
A person may not provide wireless Internet access to the public unless the person restricts access to prevent a minor from accessing material harmful to minors.
I wonder what that means. ^o^ I don't currently live in Utah, but for SLC's sake I sincerely hope this bill doesn't get anywhere.
How to tie a tie
And on a side note, this article is pretty scary; not only on the security level, but on the how-the-government-functions level. It seems like delaying an investigation into this for 7 or 8 months would narrow the chances of finding out who did it.
Committee chairman Rep. Joe Barton said NNSA Administrator Linton Brooks should be "removed from your office as expeditiously as possible" because he did not quickly notify senior Energy Department officials of the breach.
"And I mean like 5 o'clock this afternoon if it's possible," Barton, a Texas Republican, said in a statement.
